On March 6, 1963 the building of the John F. Kennedy School was authorized by a large vote of the Great Neck School District. The school had not yet been officially named at this time by the Board of Education, but was being referred to as the Redbrook School by many members of the community.
On November 22, 1963 the 35th President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.
The John F. Kennedy Elementary School opened on September 8, 1965. The school was named in his memory due to his support for education.
